Interpreters and translators in Germany

In Germany the job titles of the interpreter and translator are not proprietary. This makes understanding the different job roles difficult to understand in the face of an increasingly connected and multi-lingual European Community.
The difficulty in understanding the different job roles is made worse by the fact that no national professional register for interpreters or translators exists.

Usually to become qualified as an interpreter or translator one must graduate from a university and gain a diploma in

translation or diploma in interpreting. However, because no professional register exists and the job titles are not proprietary, qualified professionals will entitle themselves "diploma in interpreting" or "diploma in translation". This is done to show that they have achieved the relevant professional qualifications.
